Solution Tree Builds More Diverse, Inclusive Organization Using Paradigm Reach

About Solution Tree

For more than 20 years, Solution Tree has focused on creating a culture of learning — both for the educators they serve and their internal teams. In 2020, when the racial injustice movement catalyzed many to think about how they could drive progress, Solution Tree recognized their opportunity: providing employees with education and resources designed to expand their knowledge around Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI).

A DEI Journey

Solution Tree started their DEI journey with a two-day Cultural Competency Training with a DEI expert. When this training received overwhelmingly positive feedback from staff, Solution Tree realized they needed a more scalable solution that gave employees options to learn at their own pace.

As Sarah Ely, Solution Tree Director of Human Resources, worked on building a long-term DEI learning strategy with the support of Solution Tree’s CEO Jeffrey C. Jones, the pair sought a solution that offered short, digestible microlearnings — something Solution Tree employees enjoyed about other trainings. Ely also wanted a platform with advanced admin features, including analytics around access and completion rates which yielded ways to encourage participation among staff.

Enter Paradigm Reach.

After speaking with a Paradigm expert, Ely began her free trial and asked Solution Tree’s DEI committee to pilot Reach’s courses, microlearnings, and resources.

“Paradigm Reach had a plethora of content, and everyone on our diversity team appreciated the broad array of topics and perspectives. Each month we were able to provide our employees with more resources and training to facilitate deeper, awareness building conversations.”

After their trial, Ely knew Paradigm Reach would be the ideal DEI solution for Solution Tree. She mapped out the courses and microlearnings over the coming year, then launched Reach in four countries — United States, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia.

"We have a very supportive, open, and encouraging work environment, but we hadn’t had any formal DEI training."

Solution Tree's Results

Now, employees are assigned new content to review. Staff meet monthly for group discussions that bring what they‘ve learned to life: they share tips, accountability strategies, and brainstorm ways they can support each other.

According to Ely, adoption is exceeding initial expectations. “People have engaged with things that they have access to that I didn’t even assign, and are hosting book clubs related to DEI themes,” she said.

Ely isn’t only seeing an increase in participation, she is seeing tangible outcomes because of increased participation. After implementing Reach and other DEI initiatives, Solution Tree has seen a 75 percent increase in hiring candidates from underrepresented backgrounds.

“We witnessed broader diversity within the new candidate pools,” Ely said. “To get advance candidates from not only getting that first interview to being hired, that was the trick. We’re starting to see those numbers shift within the past eight months, which is a terrific outcome for the company and its workforce. The feedback from all stakeholders has been overwhelmingly positive.”
