Diversity & Inclusion
Diversity & Inclusion
All Levels

During Paradigm’s Addressing Microaggressions training, we encourage learners to shift their focus from “intent” to “impact” by learning about what microaggressions are, understanding why they happen, and most importantly, learning how to take action to address them. Our training considers microaggressions from three perspectives: the perpetrator, the target, and the bystander, and is focused on enabling people from all backgrounds to better understand how to respond to microaggressions in a way that cultivates a culture of belonging.

Training Includes:

  • Research
  • Case Studies
  • Self Reflection
  • Activities
  • Action Planning

High-Level Outline

Introduction

Introduce and define microaggressions to help attendees understand what they are, where they come from, and the impact of microaggressions on individuals, teams, and the organization overall. We discuss the distinction between intent and impact and how those concepts relate to microaggressions.

Understanding Microaggressions

After learning about what microaggressions are, we consider the impact of microaggressions from three different perspectives: a target, a bystander, and a perpetrator. From each perspective, we discuss how and why microaggressions undermine the organization’s goal to foster inclusion.

Addressing Microaggressions

Building on the discussion about each of these perspectives, the final section will focus on tangible strategies attendees can use to reduce one’s own frequency of microaggressions and hold others accountable to the same. The action planning activity will encourage each attendee to commit to 1-2 new behaviors.
