Webinar Recap: How to Create Long-Term Equity for Black Employees

On August 21, Paradigm’s Managing Director Dr. Evelyn Carter and Jolen Anderson, Global Head of Human Resources for BNY Mellon, hosted the webinar “How to Create Long-Term Equity for Black Employees.” This webinar was preceded by more than 2 months of international attention around on the unjust racial inequality that exists in society and unprecedented interest in diversity, equity, and inclusion from organizations, sparked by the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Elijah McClain, Nina Pop, and the protests that followed.

Ensuring that existing injustices don’t go unnoticed or unchecked is critical — three days after this webinar was recorded, police shot and seriously injured Jacob Blake, reminding us that we need to focus on BOTH the future and the present when it comes to advancing racial equity. While having a long-term strategy is critical, we cannot neglect supporting our Black employees immediate needs (you can find resources around communications and allyship here).

For guidance on building that long-term strategy, you can download the webinar here. In the webinar, Jolen and Evelyn discuss:

  • Jolen’s three-part framework for building equity: awareness, embedding, and accountability
  • A necessary focus on retaining and growing — not just hiring — Black employees, and the import role inclusion plays
  • How HR and DEI leaders can influence their executive teams
